Heart rate variability (HRV) measures the variation in time between successive heartbeats and reflects autonomic nervous system balance rather than a blood test. HRV indicates how effectively your body adapts to physical, psychological and metabolic stress, with lower HRV commonly associated with poor sleep, high training load, dehydration, chronic stress, illness or systemic inflammation. Persistently reduced HRV can relate to fatigue, reduced exercise recovery and impaired stress resilience, while higher HRV generally reflects stronger parasympathetic activity and recovery capacity. Because HRV is highly individual, trends over time matter more than single values. What is Heart Rate Variability (HRV)?

HRV measures the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats, providing insight into how your body adapts to stress, activity, and rest. It’s captured through wearable devices that record heartbeat intervals over time.

Why does it matter for long-term health and wellbeing?

HRV reflects how well your nervous system regulates recovery, energy, and stress balance. A stable or improving HRV trend is linked with better adaptability and overall vitality, supporting sustained performance and long-term wellness.

What’s an optimal level of HRV?

The optimal trend is a rise of 5% or more compared with your three-month average.

Typical reference range:

  • 20% = down by 5% or more (Pay attention)

What influences HRV levels?
