Blood test without a referral: how it works in Australia

Blood tests  /  Without a referral

Yes, you don't need to see your own GP first. With Vively, a doctor from our network reviews and signs your test request online. Then you visit a collection centre, with no appointment needed.

A doctor still signs off

Labs need a doctor's request for standard blood tests. The doctor just doesn't have to be your own GP.

One blood draw

At any of 3,700+ partner collection centres, with no appointment. About 10 minutes.

Explained in the app

Results against optimal ranges, usually within a few days, and a practitioner to talk them through.

The rules

Can you get a blood test without a referral in Australia?

Yes, if you mean without booking your GP to get a referral first. What you can't skip is a doctor's sign-off. Medicare only pays for pathology requested by a medical practitioner, a participating midwife or a participating nurse practitioner, and labs also need a doctor's request for standard blood tests such as cholesterol, iron or a full blood count, even when you pay privately. A few labs let you request a small set of tests yourself, such as immunity checks and drug screens, with no Medicare rebate.

What has changed is who arranges it. You used to need a GP appointment. Now online health services arrange it for you: a doctor reviews your details, signs the request and sends it to you. In practice, a "blood test without a referral" means no trip to your GP, while a doctor still signs off.

How it works

Five steps, one blood draw

  1. Choose your test

Start with the Baseline Health Check, which covers 70+ markers across heart, metabolic, liver, kidney, blood, thyroid and nutrient health. Members can add specialty tests, such as hormone panels, to the same blood draw.

  2. Your referral is arranged for you

For your Baseline, a GP from our network checks your request in a short telehealth consult. Your referral then arrives in the app, usually the same day. Add-on tests are signed by a doctor too, without another consult.

  3. Visit a collection centre

Take your referral to any of our 3,700+ accredited partner collection centres. No appointment is needed and the draw takes about 10 minutes. If you are doing a Baseline, fast overnight and drink water as normal.

  4. See your results in the app

Results land in the Vively app, usually within a few days. Each marker shows where you sit against the lab range and against our optimal range, with your trend over time. Browse what each marker means in our test library.

  5. Talk them through with a practitioner

A Vively practitioner reviews your results with you after every Baseline, explains what matters, builds your plan and checks in between tests. After 3 months, the markers your plan targets are re-tested, subject to doctor review, so you can see what has changed. If nothing needs changing, we will tell you that.

Cost

What does it cost?

  • Baseline Health Check70+ markers, with a targeted re-test after 3 months. Your membership pays for the analysis, your report, the app and your practitioner.
    $99 a month
  • Add-on testsPrivate, priced individually, on the same blood draw
    Some under $50
  • CollectionAny partner centre, no appointment
    No fee

Private online providers charge for each test. Covering the core markers in a Vively Baseline on i-screen costs about $376 across five tests, with no one to explain your results. A GP visit can cost less if your clinic bulk bills and the test is clinically needed, but you won't usually get optimal ranges or a plan. For Medicare fees, bulk billing and private prices side by side, see our full blood test cost guide.

Skip the GP waiting room. Get 70+ markers checked with one blood draw.

Your referral arrives in the app, usually the same day.

Medicare

Does Medicare cover blood tests without a GP visit?

Medicare can cover a blood test when a doctor requests it for a clinical reason, and that doctor can be a telehealth GP. That is how the lab tests in your Vively Baseline are covered. Your $99 a month membership is separate: it pays for the analysis, your report, the app and your practitioner, and Medicare doesn't cover it. Tests you choose for your own interest, with no doctor's assessment, are private and you pay the full fee.

Important

When to see your GP instead

See your own GP or seek urgent care if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, blood in your stool or urine, a fever that won't settle, or new or worsening symptoms. Vively supports preventive health and doesn't replace your GP for diagnosis, treatment or prescriptions. If your results show something that needs medical attention, we will tell you and point you to the right care.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a blood test without a referral in Australia?

Yes, if you mean without getting a referral from your GP first. Standard blood tests still need a request signed by a doctor, midwife or nurse practitioner. Online services, including Vively, arrange that for you, so you can go straight to a collection centre.

Do I need to see a GP to get a blood test with Vively?

Not in person. Your Baseline Health Check includes a short telehealth consult with a GP from our network, so Medicare covers your Baseline lab tests. After that, add-on tests are signed by a doctor without another consult.

How much does a blood test cost without a GP visit?

With Vively, Medicare covers the Baseline lab tests, and your $99 a month membership pays for the analysis, your report, the app and a practitioner to talk it through. Collection is free. Add-on tests are private and priced individually, some under $50. Other online providers usually charge per marker, from about $39 for a single test, with no Medicare rebate.

Where do I get my blood taken?

At any of our 3,700+ accredited partner collection centres around Australia. You don't need an appointment. Bring your referral from the app, and fast overnight if you are doing a Baseline.

How long do blood test results take?

Usually a few days. Your results appear in the Vively app as soon as the lab releases them, with each marker explained against the lab range and our optimal range.

Can I choose which blood tests I get?

Yes, within our test range. Everyone starts with the Baseline Health Check, then members can add specialty tests such as hormone, thyroid and heart panels. The referring doctor confirms your final marker list.
